Gary, IN : A 78-year-old woman was killed in a crash on Thursday, January, 4th 2018

A 78-year-old woman was killed in a crash late Thursday night in Long Grove, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

It is the fourth fatal crash in Lake County since Christmas Eve.At about 11:15 p.m., a sheriff's deputy on patrol discovered a serious traffic crash on Route 83 just north of Route 22 in Long Grove and called for additional response, according to Sgt. Christopher Covelli of the sheriff's office.

Covelli added that preliminary investigation shows a 2015 Subaru Outback, driven by a 78-year-old woman from Arlington Heights, was traveling northbound on Route 83 when, for an unknown reason, the driver lost control of the vehicle. It crossed the center median and struck a Jeep Liberty, driven by a 62-year-old woman from Vernon Township, according to a release on the crash.

Covelli said the driver of the Subaru was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Jeep was transported by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington with non-life threatening injuries, he said.

The Long Grove Fire Protection District and the Lake County Coroner's Office also responded to the scene.

The coroner's office is expected to conduct an autopsy on the woman Friday, Covelli said, and the crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit. The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team also assisted at the scene.

On Christmas Eve, two separate crashes each resulted in a fatality, one in Wauconda Township and one in North Barrington.

In the North Barrington crash, an 86-year-old North Barrington woman was killed after the car she was riding in on Route 59 was involved in a collision and ended up partially submerged in a wetland at about 6 p.m.

Then, at about 10:54 p.m., a 33-year-old Lakemoor man was killed after a two-vehicle crash at on Route 120 near Fischer Road in Wauconda Township.

On Dec. 28, a 55-year-old man riding a bicycle to work on the center median of Route 12 in Fox Lake was struck and killed by a car at 7:44 a.m., according to authorities.
