Woman hospitalized after car goes off road, down embankment
A 30-year-old woman is in the hospital Tuesday after her car went off the road and down an embankment near the entrance of Naval Base Point Loma.The incident occurred at about 6:44 p.m. on Catalina Boulevard. According to authorities, the car went possibly 150 feet down into a canyon.Witnesses say a female driver was speeding when she suddenly crashed through a guardrail, went airborne and then down the embankment. They were stunned when they saw all four wheels leave the ground."Like airborne, up in the air almost like a movie," said witness Rasheina Eads. "It even turned to the side."
Witness Julia Cannaday told 10News, "I heard her screech on the brakes a little bit and then we just saw her fly in the air and make an arc … airborne right into the canyon."
After the impact, witnesses ran over and looked inside the car. There was no movement but the airbags had been deployed. The front of the car was smashed and mangled.
The driver was transported to UCSD Medical Center to be treated. Sources tell 10News the 30-year-old woman is Elena Sabo and she has severe arm and leg injuries.
Those at nearby Naval Base Point Loma say the driver was speeding south on Cabrillo Memorial Drive and could not or did not navigate the turn."She didn't even hit the fence, she took this whole railing out," said Cannaday.Witnesses day the driver was going at least 100 mph. No word if the driver intentionally went off the road or if it was an accident
