HICKORY, NC : Driver hospitalized in I-40 tractor-trailer wreck on Monday, March 20th 2017
Catawba County EMS transported the driver of a tractor-trailer that overturned while exiting I-40 West on Monday afternoon to Frye Medical Center, Hickory Master Police Officer Soua Vang said.
The accident shut down I-40 Exit 123B for most of the afternoon as workers offloaded recycled paper carried by the truck. The vehicle was on its side on the shoulder of the exit ramp.
Vang said the driver’s indecision over whether or not to take the exit might have played a role in the accident.
“He decided he wanted to make a right, but he was going too fast,” Vang said.
Vang said the 21-year-old driver hurt his left arm and was shaken by the accident.
“He just got his commercial license last week,” Vang said. “He probably didn’t know the truck would flip.”
Hickory Police is investigating the accident. State Highway Patrol also was on the scene to prepare a separate report.
