An Arizona man remains in critical condition Monday with injuries suffered when the car he was riding in plunged 40 feet into the Molalla River south of Molalla Thursday.
Edward Mateo Roman-DeChenne, 21, formerly of Newberg, is undergoing treatment in the intensive-care unit at OHSU Hospital.
Roman-DeChenne was flown to the hospital by Life Flight helicopter ambulance after Molalla Fire District crews used special cutting and prying tools to extricate him from the tangled wreckage.
The driver, Juan Manuel Mauleon-Rosario, 21, of Newberg, was treated at OHSU Hospital and released. Due to federal privacy laws, no information is available about the other passenger in the car, 24-year-old Cody Kim Reid.
Roman-DeChenne was driving a Honda Civic on South Molalla Forest Road, near Kegger Rock in the Dickie Prairie area south of Molalla, around 5 p.m., when he swerved to avoid hitting a vehicle ahead of him. The Honda then went off the cliff and landed in the river – just one foot deep.
Clackamas County sheriff's deputies said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
