Fresno, CA : Cattle Truck driver dies in collision with school bus on Highway 165 near Hilmar on Thursday morning, January 22, 2015

A cattle truck driver died Thursday morning, along with some calves, when his truck crashed head-on with a school bus on Highway 165, south of Turlock, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Just before 6:30 a.m., Roxanne Boecken was driving a Hilmar Unified school bus south on Highway 165 on her way to pick up children for school.

As Boecken continued on the highway near Turner Avenue, the cattle truck driver -- a 33-year-old man from Chowchilla -- was heading north and turned into the path of the approaching school bus for an unknown reason, CHP said.

Boecken tried to avoid the truck, but ended up crashing head-on with the cattle trailer, which was hauling 14 Holstein calves, officials said.

The truck driver, who was not wearing his seat belt during the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

Boecken was taken to the hospital, but the extent of her injuries was not released.

Four calves also died because of their injuries, and some of the other calves were hurt.

No children were on the bus at the time of the crash, the CHP said.

The crash remains under investigation.
