Ocala, FL : 39- Years old Rosemary Davila killed and nine others injured after sport utility vehicle crashed Ocala day care on Monday ,May 25th 2015
Florida Highway Patrol troopers released more details about a Memorial Day crash in Volusia County that killed an Ocala woman and injured nine other family members, including seven children under age 10.
The woman who was killed, Rosemary Davila, 39, who was the director of a Christian child care facility, and all the other crash victims were from Ocala, according to the FHP.
Troop D spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes said troopers believe the right rear tire of the 1997 Ford Expedition separated from the lug nuts and came off while the sport utility vehicle traveled east on State Road 40.
Davila, the driver, lost control, and SUV went into the median, where it overturned. It then went into the westbound lanes of the roadway, ejecting several passengers. Davila died at the scene.
Montes said their traffic homicide investigators have not yet determined how many people were thrown from the vehicle. They planned to speak with firefighters and witnesses to the crash.
Based on their preliminary investigation, troopers said only one of the children, a 9-month-old boy, was properly buckled in. The baby, Tristan Roman, was in a car seat, Montes said.
She said none of the other children – Abigail Velez, 9 and her twin sister, Carmen Velez; Mike Roman Jr., 2; Brady Britt, 3; Ryan Debb, 5; and Natalie Deeb, 7 – were in car or booster seats or wearing seat belts.
Montes said troopers also believe the two other adults in the car — Michael Roman, 24, and Stephanie Roman, 25 — were not wearing their seat belts. It was not known if Davila was wearing hers or if speed was a contributing factor.
Montes said the survivors — who were taken to various hospitals — are recovering.
