Berkeley,IL : Illinois woman killed night crossing Highway 12 in West Baraboo on July, Saturday 8th 2017

A 23-year-old Illinois woman died late Saturday night after she was struck by a car as she attempted to cross Highway 12 on foot in West Baraboo at Berkley Boulevard, authorities said.

The Sauk County Sheriff's office stated in a press release the initial investigation shows the pedestrian from Worth, Illinois may have been "impaired" and moved suddenly into traffic. She was not in a crosswalk.

Authorities said a 2000 Toyota Camry driven by an 18-year-old woman from Merrimac turned onto Highway 12 from a private drive and struck the pedestrian "during a braking maneuver." The crash was reported at 10:37 p.m. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The release states speed and impairment of the driver did not appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation. The names of those involved in the incident have not been released.

There are no crosswalks at intersection between Highway 12 and Berkley Boulevard. The nearest crosswalk is about 800 feet to the south at the Highway 12 intersection with Linn Street.
