A 55-year-old city man was killed in a crash with a Mack truck on the Mixmaster of Interstate 84 Monday morning.
State police said Howard N. Pellagrino of Waterbury was pronounced dead at the scene of the 10:06 a.m. accident.
The tractor-trailer crash halted traffic for hours on the westbound side of the highway as state police investigated.
Police said the tractor-trailer, driven by Kazimierz Plaskawicki of Stratford, collided with Pellagrino’s 2006 GMC Canyon pickup.
The truck was traveling in the left center lane of five and Pellagrino was in the center lane. The vehicles collided and came to rest in the far left lane.
Police said Plaskawicki was taken to Waterbury Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was driving a truck owned by Greenwood Motor Lines of Wilmington, Ohio. It is not clear what the truck was hauling. Both vehicles were towed.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, called to the scene because of fuel leaking from the Mack truck, said about 20 gallons of fuel spilled on the road before the leak was stopped.
