Sacramento, CA : Driver dies after crashing car in Santa Clara street race on Sunday, 6th November 2016
A 20-year-old driver died Sunday afternoon after racing another car on San Tomas Expressway in Santa Clara and hitting a tree near the intersection of Homestead Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at around 12:30 p.m. Witnesses say the two vehicles, a blue Chevrolet Camaro and a Silver Acura, were traveling northbound at least 100 mph, much higher than the legal limit of 45 mph on San Tomas Expressway, CHP officers said.
The Camaro’s driver braked and veered right to avoid traffic, and went up a slight embankment and wedged the car between a tree and a concrete wall, said CHP Officer Ryan Fifield. The impact was so violent that “it took off the entire left side of the car,” Fifield saidThe driver, described as a San Jose man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Fifield said the CHP is looking for more information about the driver of the Silver Acura, which may have been a TL or TSX with a sunroof.
Street racing is an “ongoing problem throughout the entire Bay Area, and hopefully it’s something we can address,” Fifield said.
