Albuquerque, N.M : 2 UNM students killed in crash near Old Town on Friday, November 21, 2014
A 16-year-old boy and a 21-year-old man were behind bars after police said they stole a truck and crashed into a car carrying four people -- killing two of the people inside and critically injuring two others.
According to police, 16-year-old Miguel Hernandez and 21-year-old Josh Leal were driving north on Rio Grande Boulevard in a stolen truck around 11:30 p.m. Friday when they crashed into a car carrying four people heading west out of a parking lot.
The collision caused the car to flip over and land on its top.
Police have not identified the people inside the truck, but said the victims are two men and two women, all in either their late teens or early 20s.
The University of New Mexico said all four are students at the university.
Officers said Hernandez and Leal fled after the crash. Police used police dogs to track them down and arrest them.
Leal faces several charges, including vehicular homicide and child abuse or abandonment.
Police said the child abuse or abandonment charge comes from Hernandez being a minor and in the truck with him.
Online court records do not show any prior arrests for Hernandez or Leal.
Hernandez’s charges were not available.
