Somers, CT : Enfield man killed following head-on collision with ambulance in Somers on Saturday, December 20, 2014

An East Windsor man was killed Saturday when the Nissan Rogue he was driving crashed head-on into a Somers Fire Department ambulance on Route 190, state police said. Leonard W. King, 60, of Omelia Road in the Broad Brook section of East Windsor, was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic. The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m., police said. The Somers ambulance was returning to the fire station and was not carrying a patient, police said. Somers Fire Chief Gary Schiessl said four people were on board the ambulance and had been doing training. They suffered bumps and bruises, but were otherwise OK. Kate Schoenberger, 20, of Longmeadow, Mass., was driving the ambulance and Joshua Marquardt, 22, of Somers, was in the passenger seat. Katherine Morton, 20, and Kara Williams, 19, both of Somers, were in the back of the ambulance. All were checked at Johnson Memorial Hospital. The damaged ambulance is the department's backup ambulance, Schiessl said. The department will be able to respond to calls with its primary ambulance, he said.
