Columbia, SC : Lanes reopen on U.S. 701 in Conway area after car crashes into utility pole on Saturday, January 7th 2017
Lanes of traffic on U.S. 701 shut down for nearly two hours Saturday after a car crashed into a utility pole near Gerald’s Convenience Store after cold rain and temperatures started to move in.
The crash was reported about 11:15 a.m. Saturday after 18-year-old driver Taylor Nicole Hucks said she hit a slick spot on U.S. 701, lost control of her Tahoe sports utility vehicle and crashed into a power pole near Gerald’s Convenience Store in the Conway area.
The pole snapped in half, and power lines were pulled into the roadway during the crash. Another vehicle became entangled in them immediately following the wreck, and the driver of that vehicle quickly exited.
Hucks was traveling with two passengers in her vehicle at the time, and no injuries happened during the crash, according to Cpl. Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Traffic was routed through the Gerald’s Convenience Store parking lot while power crews with Santee Cooper worked to remove them from the roadway. No outages in service were reported, according to Santee Cooper’s storm center outage map online.
“All I know is if you’re gonna be on the road, buckle up because it’s dangerous out here,” said Hucks. “I didn’t think it was, but I learned my lesson.”
