Vancouver man dies in collision on I-205 southbound

A Vancouver man died in a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 205 southbound, north of Padden Parkway.The collision was reported at 1:41 p.m. near Milepost 33. A northbound Hyundai Elantra crossed the grassy median and collided head-on with a Toyota pickup in the southbound lanes, said Washington State Patrol spokesman Trooper Will Finn. The driver and sole occupant of the Hyundai, 47-year-old Craig R. Johnson, was pronounced dead at the scene.The ramp from westbound Padden Parkway to southbound I-205 and the right lane of the interstate were temporarily closed by emergency responders. The right lane opened shortly after 4 p.m. and the onramp around 4:30 p.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.A Life Flight helicopter was temporarily put on standby for the Tacoma woman driving the Toyota, Carol S. Shelley, 54. She was transported by ambulance to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center."We're not quite sure what's happened yet," Finn said.
Collision technicians with the State Patrol were at the site of the crash for several hours Wednesday afternoon. At one point, traffic was backed up to 134th Street in Salmon Creek, according to WSDOT.
The cause of the collision is under investigation by the State Patrol.
