Bakersfield, CA : Two men dead, driver arrested in northeast crash on Friday night, July 8, 2016

Two men died in a fiery crash Friday night in the northeast and the driver of their vehicle was arrested on suspicion of allegedly driving under the influence, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

BPD officers responded at 9:09 p.m. to a report of an injury collision in the 2500 block of Morning Drive, the department said in a news release. Upon arrival, they found two men had suffered fatal injuries after being ejected from a small, white Chevrolet sedan traveling southbound on Morning Drive south of Highway 178.

Three other people in the vehicle including the driver, identified as Tony Theontae Bailey, 22, sustained moderate injuries and were taken to the hospital.

Upon investigation, BPD said, it appeared the Chevrolet with five people inside was traveling south on Morning Drive when it passed another southbound vehicle. As it merged back into the southbound lane, the car veered off the road and into an embankment, ejecting the two men who were fatally injured.

BPD did not release the names and ages of the two dead men pending notification of their next of kin.

Bailey was arrested at 4:44 a.m. Saturday on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and on suspicion of two counts of vehicular manslaughter, according to the news release.

He is being held at the Kern County Jail Central Receiving Facility in lieu of $320,000 bail, and will have a hearing in his case at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Department IC of Kern County Superior Court.

According to the Kern County Superior Court database, a man with Bailey’s name and date of birth was fined $547 in January 2012 after pleading no contest to one misdemeanor count of driving without a license.

The 2500 block of Morning Drive was closed for several hours during the police investigation.
