Fitchburg,MA : Fitchburg man killed after car slams into pole in Gardner on August, Sunday 6th 2017
Family members say the man killed Sunday after his car slammed into a utility pole in Gardner was Jan Gabriel Silvestre, a 30-year-old father and Fitchburg resident.
Paul Jarvey, a spokesman for Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr., confirmed the person in the vehicle was a Fitchburg resident but declined to release any more about the person involved in the crash at the intersection of East Broadway and Minott Road.
According to a press release from the Gardner Police Department, the black 1998 Honda Civic sustained "extensive damage" when it collided with a utility pole, trapping the car's only occupant inside at about 9:15 p.m. Sunday.
The driver was removed from the car after utility crews cut power to the surrounding neighborhood, according to the release and witnesses. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.
Monday afternoon two of Silvestre's sisters stopped by Klassic Kuts Barber Shop in Leominster, where Silvestre worked, to add several balloons to the collection of items left in his memory outside the Leominster business.
"This was his favorite spot," his sister Yesi Rodriguez said.
"This was his happy place," Glady Rodriguez added.
Glady Rodriguez said her brother, a Fitchburg High School graduate, had been working at the shop for about four years and cutting hair for most of his adult life.
