Columbus, OH : A head-on collision in southwest Van Wert County on May, Sunday, 14th 2017

A head-on collision in southwest Van Wert County on Sunday killed a woman and critically injured four others, including two children, according to the Van Wert County Sheriff's Office.

The vehicles, a 2009 Volkswagen Eos and a 2012 Honda Civic, crashed about 11:45 a.m. on Ohio 81 between Willshire Eastern Road and Ohio 49 North, police reported.

Both cars were heavily damaged. Police said the Volkswagen came to rest in a yard along the road, and the Honda came to rest on the road. Evidence indicated the vehicles collided head-on, police said.

The Volkswagen's driver, Michael Schlenker, 67, of Wapakoneta, Ohio, was flown to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

His passenger, Joyce Schlenker, 57, also of Wapakoneta, was pronounced dead at the scene by Van Wert County Coroner Dr. Scott Jarvis.

The other driver, 32-year-old Stephanie Wysong of Willshire, Ohio, was flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, as were her passengers. Police identified them as two boys, ages 12 and 7.

Those injured were listed in critical condition Sunday, police reported.

It's unclear what caused the crash, but police said alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Both drivers and every passenger were wearing seat belts, police said.

The collision remained under investigation Sunday.
