Wilmington, DE : Newark man killed in a two-car crash in Brookside area, near Newark early Saturday, July 23, 2016

A 24-year-old man was killed early Saturday following in a two-car crash in Brookside area, near Newark.

Michael Burns, who was not properly restrained at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An initial investigation by Delaware State Police has determined the crash occurred about 12:40 a.m. Saturday as 29-year-old Natasha Sagapolutele, of Bear, was attempting to make a left-hand turn from eastbound East Chestnut Hill Road (Del. 4) onto Old Newark Road, said Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale, a police spokesman.

As Sagapolutele's 2005 Ford Explorer began crossing the westbound lanes of East Chestnut Hill Road, it was struck on the passenger side by a 2015 Mazda 6, driven by Burns, Hale said. The Mazda was traveling at an apparent high rate of speed on westbound East Chestnut Hill Road.

The force of the impact caused the Explorer to spin before coming to rest facing in a southbound direction across the westbound lanes of the roadway. The Mazda continued traveling in a northwesterly direction, striking a curb and then a fence, where it then came to rest, Hale said.

Sagapolutele, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was treated at the scene by New Castle County paramedics and taken to Christiana Hospital where she was admitted for not-life-threatening injuries.

The westbound lanes of East Chestnut Hill Road were closed for approximately 4 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

This crash remains under investigation by state police, Hale said.
