Berkeley, CA: Fatal I-80 crash slows East Bay traffic on Monday, 18th November, 2019

One person died in an early-morning crash that closed down several lanes of Interstate 80 on Monday, authorities said.

The collision was first reported at about 5:16 a.m. on Interstate 80 east of the Gilman Street exit in Berkeley, according to California Highway Patrol public information officer Alex Frazer.

A car was disabled in one of the center lanes, Frazer said, when another vehicle crashed into it from behind.

“That driver said that he may have been drowsy or falling asleep and didn’t see the disabled car till it was too late,” Frazer said.

The driver of the disabled car was killed, Frazer said, while the driver of the other vehicle was transported to a local hospital.

Further details about their identities was not immediately available.

As of about 7 a.m., two lanes of eastbound I-80 remained blocked with no estimated time of re-opening.
