Elco, PA : Tractor-trailer crashes at Mon/Fayette Expressway toll booth on Wednesday, January 7, 2015
The driver of a tanker truck was injured after crashing into a Mon/Fayette Expressway (Route 43) toll booth Wednesday morning.
Emergency personnel were called to the southbound side of the toll plaza off Interstate 70, near the Elco exit, about 6:40 a.m.
Charleroi Fire Department Capt. Matt Prentice said the tractor-trailer crashed as it approached the toll booth, knocking down one of the pillars. The truck came to rest between two of the booths, Prentice said.
Prentice said the impact caused about 20 gallons of diesel fuel and five gallons of oil to spill onto the highway.
Prentice said Washington County's hazardous materials team representative Ron Sicchitano Jr. was called to survey the spill, but Charleroi firefighters were able to remove most of the fuel from the road. The turnpike commission also sent a crew to assist in the clean up, Prentice said.
Prentice said working in the frigid temperatures was a challenge.
“Trying to stay warm out there definitely wasn't easy,” Prentice said, adding firefighters stayed at the crash site for about two hours.
The driver, who was not identified, was able to get out of the rig before emergency crews arrived. Prentice said he was being treated by Brownsville Ambulance Service personnel when firefighters arrived at the scene.
State police at the Troop T Barracks in New Stanton are investigating the crash.
