Nogales, AZ : Three injured in head-on collision on Grand Avenue Friday afternoon, March 31, 2017

The driver of a small SUV sustained serious injuries after apparently losing control of his vehicle and swerving into oncoming traffic on North Grand Avenue Friday afternoon.

Witnesses at the scene said the 30-year-old male appeared to lose control of his 1998 Chevrolet SUV when a utility trailer he was pulling jackknifed, causing the northbound vehicle to stray into the southbound lane and collide with a commercial truck, according to Sgt. Robert Fierros of the Nogales Police Department.

According to the police report, the man was found partially ejected from driver’s side window and was airlifted from the Nogales Fire Department Station 2 to a trauma center in Tucson.

There were also three juvenile passengers in the SUV at the time of the accident. A 10-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl were transported to Holy Cross Hospital with minor injuries. A 4-year-old boy who had been properly restrained in a carseat in the back seat did not sustain any major injuries, according to Fierros.

The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.

The crash, which occurred around 4 p.m. on Friday, caused both north- and southbound traffic on Grand Avenue near Baffert Drive to be backed up and diverted for almost an hour while the scene was cleared.
