Montevallo , AL : Student of University of Montevallo died in a car crash on Monday September 1st 2014
The University of Montevallo is mourning the loss of a student who died in a car crash over the holiday weekend.
University of Montevallo Media Relations and Communications Manager Diane Kennedy-Jackson said this morning that sophomore Rachel Pigott of Foley died in a crash sometime Monday while returning to the Shelby County institution.
"My understanding was she was involved in a car accident on the way back to Montevallo," Kennedy-Jackson said.
She did not have information about where and when the crash occurred.
Pigott graduated from Foley High School in 2013. She was an elementary education major at the university.
She was a contestant in 2012 for Baldwin County's Distinguished Young Woman celebration. She was a three-time All-County selection and a three-time state qualifier in cross country in high school, as well as a three-year varsity cheerleader and member of the National Honor Society.
At the university, Pigott was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority and part of the Honors College. She was a gold side cheerleader for College Night and a walk-on for the women's cross-country team this fall, Kennedy-Jackson said.
The university is helping students and others deal with news of Pigott's death.
"The counseling services team spent most of the night on campus last night offering counseling and support for friends and sorority sisters and teammates," Kennedy-Jackson said.
The university is encouraging any students, faculty and staff to meet with a counselor on campus if they need help. The university had not received information about a memorial service from the family.
