A Greenville man died in a head-on collision in Abbeville Thursday evening.

The Abbeville Chief Deputy Coroner Sam Ferguson pronounced William Darnell, 66, dead at the scene of a crash on Highway 28 just after 6 p.m.

South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said Darnell was heading south on Highway 28 when he crossed the center line and struck an tractor-trailer head-on.

Highway patrol said Darnell was wearing a seat belt and had to be cut out of his 2012 Nissan sedan.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Pedro Diaz-Calana, was not injured, highway patrol said.

This collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
