Chicago, IL : 15-year-old girl driving wrong way dies in Loop crash early Monday, January 2, 2017
A 15-year-old girl was killed after crashing an SUV into a Loop "L" support beam early Monday, officials said.
Just after midnight, emergency crews were called to the 100 block of South Wells Street in the Loop, according to Chicago police.
The girl was traveling north on Wells, the wrong way on a one-way street, officials said. The Nissan Pathfinder she was driving hit the "L" platform support beam for an unknown reason. The girl was pronounced dead at the crash site.
She was later identified as Hailee Melendez, of the 4800 block of North Magnolia Avenue in the Uptown neighborhood, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Melendez was pronounced dead at 12:28 a.m. on the scene, according to the office.
Police were investigating the cause of the single-vehicle crash.
In Illinois someone must be 16 to get a driver's license. Fifteen-year-olds are eligible for a learner's permit, which allows them to drive only with the supervision of a licensed driver 21 or older, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
