Two people were seriously injured after their car crashed into a tree off Route 539 north early Saturday morning, police said.
At 4:17 a.m., police received a call from a passing driver about a car crash near mile marker 18 on Route 539, Sgt. Paul Sullivan said.
Both the driver and passenger had to be airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune to be treated for serious injuries they suffered in the crash, Sullivan said.
The names of the driver and passenger are being withheld pending the notification of family members, according to Sullivan.
Patrolman Robert Flynn, patrolman Michael Verwey, and members of the Ocean County Fatal Accident Support Team responded to investigate the crash.
