Swisher, IA : Three people die in wrong-way crash on Interstate 380 in eastern Iowa on Tuesday, July 5, 2016
Three people have died in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 380 in eastern Iowa.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that 21-year-old Jordan Dietrich, of Victor, 22-year-old Furaha Nyabitanga, of Iowa City, and 26-year-old Djumapili Shabani, of Cedar Rapids, died in a crash around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday near the town of Swisher.
The Iowa State Patrol says Dietrich was driving a car the wrong way in a northbound lane of I-380 near the exit for Swisher.
Investigators say Dietrich then swerved onto the east shoulder, where a car driven by Nyabitanga had pulled over to avoid Dietrich's oncoming car. Shabani was a passenger in Nyabitanga's car.
The crash, which remains under investigation, closed the northbound lanes of I-380 for nearly four hours Tuesday morning.
