Coral Gables, FL : Three burglary suspects arrested after multi-vehicle crash in Coral Gables on Friday afternoon, November 14, 2014
Police said three burglary suspects are to blame for a violent three-vehicle collision that sent a driver to the hospital, Friday afternoon.
The crash occurred at Bird Road and Granada Boulevard, one of Coral Gables' busiest intersections. According to Coral Gables Police, the getaway driver was behind the wheel of a Hyundai sedan that crashed into two other cars, right in front of a police officer "Before she could even catch up and turn on her lights, she witnessed the accident here with these other innocent victims that were involved," said Coral Gables Interim Police Chief Edward Hudak.
Investigators said the driver and two passengers inside the Hyundai were involved in a burglary at a home located on the 500 block of Laredo Avenue moments before the collision. Shortly after a call went out over police radio, the officer spotted the getaway vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. She U-turned her cruiser and shortly after, the Hyundai slammed into the two other sedans.
After the crash, the officer rendered aid to the injured driver and called in for help. "It was quite a severe accident. She stopped, radioed to the other officers about the subjects running, and she rendered aid to two people that were trapped inside the car," said Hudak. "As that was going on, the other officers from the Burglary Task Force, the K-9 units and the Special Initiatives Team surrounded the area."
Police said the suspects exited the Hyundai and fled the scene on foot. Officers captured one subject on the neighboring Biltmore Golf Course and another one in a canal. A K-9 took down the third suspect. "I think everybody gets a A1A," said Hudak. "I think, between the K-9 units, the officers, the supervisors, it was a great team effort."
The injured driver was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. The third suspect was also transported to JMH with bite wounds from the canine.
Authorities shut down Bird Road for several hours while they investigated. They later reopened the busy roadway to rush hour traffic.
Police believe the suspects apprehended may have also been involved in several burglaries in the days prior to Friday's incident.
