Ojai, CA : One person died in fiery crash on Route 33 near Matilija Canyon Road early Saturday, January 23, 2016

An Ojai man has been identified as the driver of a car that crashed and caught on fire early Saturday near Ojai, killing one person.

David Andrade-Ruiz, 22, has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in the crash. Andrade-Ruiz was driving north on Route 33 near Matilija Canyon Road about 1:10 a.m. when he veered off the road and hit the hillside, according to the California Highway Patrol. The car caught on fire, trapping one of the passengers, who died at the scene.

The Ventura County Medical Examiner's office has not identified the victim.

The others in the vehicle managed to escape and were found about half a mile from the crash. Two passengers were taken to Ventura County Medical Center, with major injuries, authorities said. Andrade-Ruiz, who had moderate injuries, was also taken to the center.

The CHP is still investigating the crash, which closed the northbound lane of the highway from about 2 a.m. to 7 a.m.

According to preliminary reports, nearby rocks or boulders had fallen on the vehicle.
