Statesville, N.C : Man dies in Iredell crash, vehicle fire early Monday morning, March 13, 2017

One man was killed and another was critically injured early Monday morning when a truck veered of the road, struck a tree and burst into flames.

The driver, Jerry Gale Bare III, 23, of Stony Point, died at the scene, according to Trooper R.A. Goodin with the N.C. Highway Patrol. He suffered burns, but Goodin said he didn’t know if they were the cause of death.

Goodin, who was not the investigating trooper but was handling media questions on Monday, said the truck was traveling west on Highway 70 around 1:40 a.m. when it ran off the right side of the road and down an embankment before hitting a tree. The wreck occurred near the intersection of Sharon School Road, according to reports.

The passenger, 26-year-old Christopher Acarr of Statesville, was riding in the bed of the pickup, said Goodin. He was ejected from the truck and was later transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem with critical injuries. His current condition wasn’t available.
