A wrong-way driver was killed late Monday night in a head-on crash in Madison County, police say.
Max A. Davis, 24, of Carlyle, Ill., was the driver of a 1993 Ford Ranger that was heading north in the southbound lanes of Illinois 255 at New Poag Road about 10:20 p.m., authorities said. Davis' pickup collided with a southbound 2005 Cadillac STS, police said.
The pickup burst into flames after the collision, prompting Illinois state troopers to use a squad car to push the Cadillac away from the burning Ford Ranger, police said.
Davis died at the crash scene and was identified through dental records, authorities said. The coroner's office said routine toxicology tests would be performed to determine if any alcohol or drugs were in his system.
The man driving the Cadillac was flown by helicopter to St. Louis University Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.
