NEWBERRY SPRINGS, CA : Coroner officials ID Nevada woman killed in I-15 crash on Wednesday, May 31, 2017
Newberry Springs, California
Officials released the name of the woman who lost her life in a double rollover crash on Interstate 15 Wednesday afternoon.
San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner officials said Sharmaine Bounds, of Henderson, Nevada, died in the crash, which occurred just after 12:45 p.m. Wednesday on I-15 in an unincorporated area of Newberry Springs.
Bounds was headed north on I-15 approaching Field Road when her 2014 Nissan Armada was struck by a person in a 2005 Lexus GX40. California Highway Patrol Officer Adam Carmichall said the Lexus was headed south when it experienced a “tire tread separation”, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The Lexus then overturned through the center divider and into the northbound lanes of I-15, where it struck another vehicle before colliding with Bounds’ Nissan Armada, which also overturned, Carmichall said.
Bounds and a passenger were trapped in the Nissan Armada from the impact. Bounds was pronounced dead at the scene, Sheriff-Coroner officials said.
The passenger in the Armada was extricated from the vehicle and sustained major injuries. The occupants of the Lexus suffered minor injuries and declined medical transport, officials said.
An airship was requested for the injured party, but further details on the person’s condition weren’t available Thursday.
Carmichall said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Barstow CHP office.
