Charleston,WV : Minor injuries were reported in a tractor-trailer crash on April, friday 21th 2017
Charleston, West Virginia
Minor injuries were reported Friday after a tractor-trailer crashed and burst into flames on the West Virginia Turnpike near the Chelyan toll plaza.
It happened just before 1 p.m. just south of the Chelyan toll plaza. A tractor-trailer was traveling south on the Turnpike when it went through the toll gate, struck a wall and “exploded,” said West Virginia Parkways Authority dispatchers.
Dispatchers said the truck, which was hauling snack food, did not spill anything but debris from the crash littered the road.
Four passenger vehicles, including one vehicle on the northbound side, also were involved in the incident, dispatchers said. Some of those vehicles hit debris from the crash, while others suffered heat damage from the fire.
“There were very, very minor injuries,” a dispatcher said. “No one was transported to the hospital.”
Firefighters responded to put out the blaze. State Police also responded to the crash.
Some debris from the crash was pushed to the road shoulder, but crews have reopened both the north and southbound lanes. The southbound lanes were closed from about 1 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. and the northbound lanes were closed from about 1 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.
Dispatchers said road crews would clear the debris Friday evening when traffic in the area lightened.
