The driver of a dump truck that crashed into the median on Route 29 in Ellicott City Thursday morning was pinned inside the vehicle for more than two hours before being flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he remains in serious condition, according to Howard County police. The driver, Kenneth Tyrone Beidleman, 29, of Mitchellville, was traveling northbound on Route 29 just before 8:30 a.m., when his truck left the roadway and struck a guardrail and an overhead sign post, according to police. Police said investigators believe the dump truck, which was hauling rocks and dirt, had a tire blow out, causing a loss of control. The accident occurred between Route 40 and Route 103 in Ellicott City. Police said the county's department of fire and rescue services, along with the GO-team from shock trauma assisted in a complicated extraction. It took more than 40 rescue workers and 12 pieces of equipment from four stations to free the driver, according to police. The single-vehicle collision caused Route 29 northbound and two lanes of Route 29 southbound to be closed Thursday morning, police said. Police said the two southbound lanes and two northbound lanes reopened at about 1 p.m., but added that the scene is still being cleaned up and motorists should use alternate routes.
