Pasco, WA : 6-year-old boy killed in U-turn crash on Highway 26 near the Interstate 90 junction in Grant County on Tuesday, Oct 27, 2015
A 6-year-old Pasco boy was killed when the car he was riding in made a U-turn east of Vantage and was hit by a semi-truck.
William Cruz, a kindergartner at Virgie Robinson Elementary School in Pasco, was pronounced dead Tuesday at the scene of the collision on Highway 26 near the Interstate 90 junction in Grant County, Coroner Craig Morrison said.
Eugenio Cruz-Hernandez, 48, was driving a Ford Focus east on the highway about 11:30 a.m. when he made a U-turn about 800 feet from the junction and was struck by the eastbound semi, the Washington State Patrol said.
William and his 13-year-old sister, Reyna, were passengers in the car.
Cruz-Hernandez and the girl were flown by helicopter to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland.
Hospital staff reported that Cruz-Hernandez was in satisfactory condition Wednesday.
The girl, also a student at Virgie Robinson, was transferred to Seattle Children’s hospital, where her condition was not immediately available Wednesday evening.
The driver of the truck, Christopher L. Nelms, 38, of Pasco, was not injured, troopers said.
It does not appear drugs or alcohol were involved, troopers said.
Everyone involved in the collision was wearing a seat belt.
“It does not appear (Nelms) was doing anything wrong,” said Trooper Darren Wright.
The state patrol will continue to investigate the crash.
