Gretna, LA : 1 dead in 5-vehicle crash in Gretna on Sunday, April 3, 2016
A 53-year-old Terrytown man on a motorcycle was killed Sunday night (April 3) when a driver ignored a red light and caused a five-vehicle crash in Gretna, Louisiana State Police said. A second motorcyclist involved in the crash was in critical condition.
It was the second fatal motorcycle crash Sunday in metro New Orleans, and the fourth in less than a month.
State Police say Harmon was killed on U.S. 90 near the intersection with Lafayette Street after a 2014 Infiniti QX80 driven by Lille Liccardi, 72, of Greta, struck his 2016 Harley Davidson around 6:30 p.m. Police say Liccardi "disregarded a red light" for reasons still under investigation. Speed or impairment are not believed to have been factors, police said.
Harmon was ejected, police said, and his motorcycle slid across the street, impacting two other vehicles stopped at a red light in the northbound lanes of Lafayette Street at the same intersection.
The second motorcyclist, Mark Duffy, 56, of Gretna, was also ejected when his 2006 Harley Davidson struck Liccardi's QX80 on the driver's side rear door during the crash. Duffy was being treated at University Medical Center, police said Monday. Harmon was also taken there Sunday but pronounced dead upon arriving at the hospital.
The two vehicles on Lafayette Street hit by Harmon's motorcycle were a 1993 Honda Civic driven by Sheila Costa, 46, of Gretna, and a 2015 Land Rover driven by Chelsey Lee, 29, of Gretna. None of the drivers in the cars or SUVs were injured. All three drivers wore their seat belts, and both Harmon and Duffy were wearing helmets.
Police say Liccardi volunteered for a breath test, and no presence of alcohol was detected. Blood test results are pending.
The crash is still under investigation, police said, and criminal charges are pending.
