GREENSBORO, NC : A woman was killed in a crash on Wednesday, May 31, 2017

A woman was killed Wednesday morning after a vehicle with seven people in it traveling on Interstate 40 flipped in a construction zone.

According to a police news release, the incident happened around 3:20 a.m. near Sandy Ridge Road.

A witness told officers that the eastbound vehicle was attempting to merge into traffic when the driver over-corrected to avoid hitting a tractor-trailer. The vehicle flipped and three passengers were ejected.

The woman was pronounced dead at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. The other two people ejected are listed in critical condition.

Two other occupants of the vehicle were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Their conditions are unknown at this time. One occupant was uninjured.

The interstate reopened shortly after 7 a.m.

The crash is being investigated by the Police Department's Traffic Reconstruction Unit.
