Daylon Cummings, 15, Keyshawn Lenoard, 19, Tyler McNair, 18, and Kadautu Worley, 16, died in a crash around 10:15 a.m. just a few miles south of Lumberton.
The bus driver, Kinyata Locklear, 36, was taken to the hospital in serious condition. No students were on the bus, which was being taken to a garage for maintenance.
Troopers estimated the crash happened at 80 mph. Worley, the car's driver, was wearing a seat belt, while the other three passengers were ejected.
Robeson County deputies responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle that a citizen driver was following, troopers said. A deputy eventually caught up with the caller, and both saw the remnants of the collision after rounding a curve, troopers said.
Troopers originally told multiple media outlets that deputies were pursuing the car but later said that wasn't the case.
