Hutchinson, KS : Penalosa man killed in farming accident on Sunday,15th April 2018
A Penalosa man was killed late Monday morning when struck by the bucket of a skid steer while attempting to set T-posts into the ground.
The Reno County Sheriff’s Department identified the accident victim as Daniel Bruce Smith, 34, of Penalosa.
According to investigators, Smith was holding a T-post and a tape measure to measure how much was going into the ground as the other person operated the equipment to drive the post into the ground.
The bucket apparently came loose from the skid steer, struck Smith in the head and then landed on his lower extremities, pinning him to the ground. The skid steer operator immediately got out of the unit and attempted to move the bucket off of Smith, which took him several minutes.
When officers arrived at the scene in the 27400 block of Sterling Road, near Maple Grove,, the other man, not identified in the report, was already performing CPR.
Resuscitation efforts by the deputy and then EMS, however, were unsuccessful and Smith was pronounced dead at the scene after about 30 minutes..
