Martin County, FL : One person died and four others injured in a two-vehicle rollover crash on U.S. 1 and SE Fischer Street in Stuart on Tuesday afternoon, December 1, 2015
One person died and four others were injured in a two-vehicle rollover crash early Tuesday afternoon in Martin County, officials said.
Fire Rescue crews went to Southeast U.S. 1 and Southeast Fischer Street about 12:10 p.m. after they received several 911 calls regarding a serious crash, said Stuart Police spokesman Cpl. Brian Bossio.
When crews arrived, Bossio said, they found a blue Chevrolet Tahoe with front-end damage and a silver Honda CR-V rolled over with a smashed passenger side.
Donald F. Maloney, 83, a passenger in the CR-V, was killed in the crash. The Honda belonged to the Wallace Cadillac car dealership located on the southeast corner of the intersection, said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky.
Maloney of Stuart was pronounced dead at the scene, Bossio said. The driver of the Honda, Dennis E. Scarborough, 60, and passenger Rosary Burbank, 75, both of Stuart, were flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce. Their conditions were unknown as of late Tuesday. The driver of the Tahoe, Shawn Allen Tefft, 45, and passenger Laura Ashley Tefft, 18, both of Stuart, were taken to a Martin Health System hospital with minor injuries, Wysocky said.
Florida Highway Patrol traffic homicide investigators were on the scene late Tuesday afternoon. Northbound traffic on U.S. 1 was redirected around the crash down Southeast Miami Avenue to Southeast Commerce Avenue for about three and a half hours.
After an initial investigation, officials determined the Tahoe was traveling northbound on U.S. 1 while the CR-V was traveling southbound on U.S. 1, said sheriff’s traffic unit supervisor Lt. Stephen Mochen. The driver of the CR-V turned left onto Fischer Street and into the path of the Tahoe, Mochen said. The front of the Tahoe hit the passenger side of the CR-V in what Mochen described as a “T-bone” crash. The car then slid into a pole and overturned, according to a FHP news release. The crash remains under investigation, FHP officals said.
The fatal crash puts the county at 29 traffic fatalities so far this year compared to 17 traffic fatalities for all of last year, Mochen said.
“It’s a shame because the people are so impatient,” Mochen said. “It’s very frustrating for us working traffic because these accidents can be avoided if people would just pay attention to what they’re doing.”
In November alone, Mochen’s 13-member traffic unit made 809 stops, responded to 304 crashes and issued 32 DUIs.
“We have so much traffic up here right now, and some of these drivers are so out of control and so impatient with driving aggressively, cutting people off, trying to run the red lights,” Mochen said. “They’re being careless, and it’s crazy.”
