WALNUT CREEK TWP, OH : Millersburg bicyclist dies after collision with car on Tuesday, October 3, 2017
An 80-year-old area man died Tuesday evening from injuries sustained from a bike-car crash earlier in the day.
Nelson J. Miller, 3348 State Route 39, Millersburg, was pronounced dead by officials at Akron General Medical Center at approximately 6 p.m. He’d been flown by emergency helicopter to the hospital from the scene following the 5:09 a.m. crash.
According to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, Miller was riding a bicycle eastbound on state Route 39 in the buggy lane when he attempted a left turn onto Walnut Creek Township Road 401. In doing so, his bike crossed into the path of an oncoming eastbound 2003 Volvo S60, driven by Joshua A. Young, 30, of 205 E. Seventh St., West Lafayette.
Young, despite swerving into the westbound lane, said he was unsuccessful in attempting to avoid a collision, according to Chief Deputy Richard Haun, noting there is no indication Miller, who was not wearing a helmet or reflective vest, signaled his turn.
It also is unknown whether the bike’s light was on or working, said Haun.
Young was not injured in the crash.
In the wake of the crash, Haun said, it’s important for anyone on a bicycle or operating a slow-moving vehicle — buggy or tractor — to be attentive to other traffic on the road, taking into account the speed differential between them.
The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
