Charlotte, NC : Woman was dead and her two young sons injured after a crash that shut down Independence Boulevard on Monday morning September 8th 2014
Charlotte, North Carolina
A woman was killed and her two young sons injured after a crash that shut down Independence Boulevard Monday morning.
The accident occurred just before 9 a.m. at Independence Boulevard and Fugate Avenue.
Police say 28-year-old Silje Grayston was sitting in a Volvo at the light on Fugate waiting to turn right onto Independence when a Toyota RAV4, being driven by 34-year-old Caw Kam, "suddenly veered from the left lane across four lanes of Independence Blvd. and struck the Volvo in the driver's side."
Silje was pronounced dead at the scene. Her two sons, ages one and three, were taken to the hospital with injuries.
Officials have not released the extent of the boys' injuries, but did say that both were in child restraints in the back seat of the Volvo.
Kam was arrested at the scene and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and open container after consuming alcohol. Investigators say that initial findings suggest that driver fatigue contributed to the accident.
He was being held on a $101,000 bond as of Monday afternoon.
The crash is still under investigation.
