Barrington , IL : Pickup truck struck a utility pole after driver lost control of the vehicle near Federal Savings Bank on Wednesday , January 14th 2015
A portion of Route 125 was closed for nine hours Wednesday after a pickup truck struck a utility pole near Federal Savings Bank.
The accident occurred around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, just north of the Route 9 intersection. Police Chief Richard Conway said it appears the accident occurred when Exeter resident Matthew Powell, 31, was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck south on Route 125. Another vehicle pulled out of Federal Savings Bank in front of Powell’s vehicle, police said.
Powell swerved hard, trying to take evasive action and lost control of the vehicle, causing the pickup truck to strike the utility pole in front of the bank, police said.
Powell, who was by himself in the vehicle, was not injured in the accident, said Conway.
He said the identity of the other driver is not known, because that driver left the scene. The two vehicles never collided with each other.
The utility pole was broken in several places in the accident. Because of safety issues caused by wires that fell onto the roadway, police closed the portion of Route 125 between the intersection of Route 9 and the intersection of Scruton Pond Road. Traffic was reopened around 10 p.m., said Conway.
The road closure caused traffic to be backed up most of the day. For nine hours, drivers on Route 125 were detoured to narrower secondary roads. With some drivers being unfamiliar with those roads, it caused traffic to go slower and get backed up, said Conway.
The pole was replaced before the road reopened, he said.
Responding to the scene Wednesday were Barrington police, Barrington Fire and Rescue Department and state police. Metrocast, Fairpoint, and Public Service of New Hampshire, which had wires connected to the utility pole, also responded.
Conway said although the incident caused some power glitches, he is not aware of any full power outages.
The 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck sustained extensive damage to the front and was towed from the scene. The speed limit for the section of Route 125 where the accident occurred is 35 mph, said Conway. He said police have no reason to believe alcohol was a factor in the incident.
