Westchester Township, IN : Chain reaction crash closes southbound 49 on Wednesday, 14th November 2018
The southbound lanes of Ind. 49 north of Indian Boundary Road were closed during rush-hour, following a four-vehicle chain-reaction accident, the Chesterton Fire Department is reporting.
Capt. Rudy Jimenez told the Chesterton Tribune today that the CFD responded to the crash at 3:24 p.m., after the driver of one pickup truck rear-ended a second pickup truck. The impact of the collision forced the second into the rear of a third pickup, and the third into the rear of fourth pickup.
The driver of the second pickup had to be extricated from his vehicle and both that driver and the driver of the third were transported to hospital, Jimenez said.
By the time firefighters had arrived on the scene, traffic had already backed up to the I-94 interchange, Jimenez noted. To facilitate their response, all southbound lanes of Ind. 49 north of Indian Boundary Road were closed and Porter Police were diverting motorists off Ind. 49 onto East Oak Hill Road.
It was necessary to close the southbound lanes, Jimenez said, not only to make the scene safer for firefighters to work but to clear space for multiple response vehicles. Ambulances dispatched to the crash actually approached the scene from Indian Boundary Road northbound in the southbound lanes.
The CFD cleared the scene at 4:05 p.m.
At deadline today the Chesterton Police Department had not released its report on the accident.
