A motorist from Modesto was killed and a male passenger suffered “moderate” injuries in a high-speed crash on Skyline Boulevard north of Highway 9 late Monday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver, a 26-year-old man from Modesto, has not been identified by the coroner’s office.

The crash on Skyline Boulevard occurred just after 6 p.m. CHP investigators say the two men, both from Modesto, were traveling north on State Route 35 (Skyline Boulevard) in a 2008 Mazda MX5 sports cars at a “high rate of speed” when the driver lost control while navigating a left-right serpentine “s” curve. The Mazda spun clockwise 180 degrees and traveled off the west edge of the roadway, the rear of the car collided with two trees.

The Mazda then spun counterclockwise and came to a stop in a gravel turnout on the west side of 35. Emergency personnel attempted CPR on the driver before he was transported to Valley Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the CHP.

The 24-year-old passenger was airlifted to Stanford Medical Center with unknown moderate injuries.
