Ocala,FL : Ocala driver killed in Thursday night crash on Thursday, 7th May, 2020

A 55-year-old Ocala man was killed Thursday night when the vehicle he was driving went off the roadway, barreled through a chain-link fence and rested on its side against a tree in someone’s yard.

The fatality was the third -- two in the county and one in the city -- since Monday. The last two deaths occurred on opposite ends of the county within 24 hours of each other.

In Thursday’s traffic crash, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said a man driving a Toyota Prius was speeding northbound on Southwest 62nd Avenue Road.

Troopers said the driver failed to negotiate a left curve and the vehicle overturned on its right side. The vehicle smashed through roughly waist-high chain-link fence and finally stopped against an oak tree near Southwest 101st Place.

Hearing the noise, the occupants of the home came outside and called 911. The driver was pronounced deceased by Marion County Fire Rescue officials. FHP officials said they were notified about the crash shortly before 11 p.m.

Neighbors told the Star-Banner that motorists usually speed up and down the roadway. The posted speed limit is 35 mph.

One neighbor said drivers easily double the speed limit on the roadway. The neighbors say sometimes the vehicles traveling along the grassy shoulder, but nothing like what they saw on Thursday night.
