Maryville, TN : Single car collision on Smokies Spur results in fatality on Thursday September 1 2016
A 59-year-old male driver from Georgia was killed in a single-vehicle wreck on the Spur between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge on Thursday.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers responded to a motor vehicle accident on the southbound Spur at approximately 11:23 p.m. Thursday. A tree along the roadside appeared to have fallen on the 2005 Ford truck.
The driver was killed in the collision at the scene. There were no passengers in the vehicle.
The Gatlinburg Police Department and Fire Department provided assistance.
This was the second traffic fatality in the Park in seven days. The earlier wreck occurred in Blount County. Shortly before midnight on Aug. 26, Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers responded to a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a woman along the Foothills Parkway West near Chilhowee Lake.
Shirley Jean Alexander Clifton, 64, of Woodstock, Ga., had gotten out of the vehicle she was traveling in as a passenger to observe a snake on the roadway. While out of the vehicle, she was struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle.
