Orlando,FL : Troopers ID 4-year-old struck, killed on John Young Parkway on may, friday 12th 2017

The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the 4-year-old special needs child who wandered out of his hotel room along John Young Parkway and was hit and killed by a van early Friday morning.

Boy was able to unlock the motel door he was staying at, FHP says
Parents were unaware of what happened, according to FHP
Kiyan Tomlin's body was discovered by troopers around 2:05 a.m. with two mismatched shoes and only a T-shirt on, FHP stated.

At first, the FHP did not know whom the boy belonged to and there was no one with the boy when troopers arrived on scene, authorities stated.

Troopers traced Tomlin’s footprints to a motel.

It took them an hour to spot a door on the first floor that was cracked open at the Extended Stay America motel in Orlando. FHP were able to find Tomlin’s parents, sleeping, unaware of what happened.

It was believed Tomlin was able to un-latch his motel room door lock and walk over a dirt embankment, some construction liner, a barrier wall and onto the John Young Parkway, the FHP stated.

Tomlin, who had special needs, was able to get to the northbound lane and it is there where a Ford van hit and killed the boy, the FHP said.

The driver, 56-year-old Mauricio Azocar, said he did not see the child, according to FHP, adding that there was nothing he could have done. Azocar stayed at the scene.

“They knocked very vigorously and startled the parents awake, the mother and the father, they came to the door and unfortunately did confirm that is their child,” Sgt. Kim Montes of the FHP said.

Tomlin and his mother were from New York and the father was from this area. They were staying here at this Extended Stay because they were looking for a home to move into.

The Department of Children and Families has been called in to investigate.
