Marion, NC : 1 dead in collision with Marion police vehicle on Wednesday, 30th January 2019

A Spruce Pine driver was pronounced dead at the scene of an early morning collision involving a Marion police vehicle, according to reports.

At approximately 6:50 a.m. Wednesday morning, emergency units and law enforcement responded to US 221 North at Pitts Station Road after receiving reports of a motor vehicle collision involving a police vehicle.

According to Trooper Michael Childres of the NC Highway Patrol, a Marion Police Department vehicle – driven by Cpl. Christian Wyatt and occupied by Officer Matthew Huggins and K-9 Marsoc – were traveling northbound on 221 to attend training in Avery County when the vehicle collided with a GMC Sonoma – driven by 48-year-old David Christopher Ollis of Spruce Pine – that was turning left from 221 South onto Pitts Station Road.

Ollis was pronounced dead at the scene upon arrival of paramedics, while Wyatt and Huggins were taken to Mission Hospital McDowell and later released.
