Saint Paul, MN : A Hutchinson man was seriously injured in a three-semi crash on Wednesday, August 23, 2017
A Hutchinson man was seriously injured Wednesday in a three-semi crash on Houston, Texas' east side.
According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Damon Mackedanz was driving a Kenworth truck tractor towing a flatbed semi-trailer eastbound on the I-10 freeway.
When a Freightliner in front of him in a moving lane of traffic became disabled, the vehicles collided and began to skid when the front vehicle applied brakes. A Freightliner behind Mackedanz struck his vehicle, and jackknifed.
All three vehicles caught fire, and a passenger in the most rear vehicle died.
Eastbound lanes were closed following the crash, and witnesses reported thick, black smoke filled the sky for miles.
On Thursday evening, a family member reported Mackedanz, a graduate of the Hutchinson class of 1989, was hospitalized in stable but critical condition.
According to a gofundme page set up to aid Mackedanz, his injuries include a broken back, fractured ribs, ruptured spleen, broken leg and other injuries and burns. He will be out of work for at least six months, and lost two of his dogs in the crash.
Of Mackedanz, his sister, December Mackedanz, said, “Anyone that knows Damon knows his children and his semi's are his life.”
