Hyannis, MA : Tractor-trailer crashes into Hyannis ambulance on Thursday September 11 2014.
A tractor-trailer collided with a Hyannis Fire Department ambulance near the intersection of Route 132 and Bearse's Way on Thursday afternoon.
Nobody was injured in the collision at about 2 p.m. and there were no patients onboard the ambulance, which was on its way to a call, according to Hyannis Fire Chief Harold Brunelle.
The tractor-trailer failed to stay within its lane, squeezing the ambulance against a curb and scraping along its side until it was pinned, Barnstable police Lt. David Cameron said.
The driver will be cited for failure to stay within marked lanes, he said.
The ambulance is one of three owned by the fire department and had just been brought back into service after being out for repairs, Brunelle said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Joao Ferreira of Connecticut, said he had stopped at the traffic light where he had been forced to move over because of a car on his left. When the light turned green and he began moving the ambulance was in the lane on his right, Ferreira said.
With only two ambulances operational the department may have to rely on mutual aid if it has multiple calls, Brunelle said.
A new ambulance can cost $250,000 but it looks as though the damage is repairable, Brunelle said.
A tow truck was called in to lift the tractor-trailer off the ambulance.
