Milwaukee, WI : 31-year-old man dead and eight other people injured in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 90/39 near Edgerton Sunday night, August 14, 2016

A 31-year-old man is dead and eight other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday night on Interstate 90/39 near Edgerton, a spokesman for the Wisconsin State Patrol said.

The man's name is being withheld pending family notification, a dispatcher said.

The crash happened at 11:27 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the Interstate, near the Newville exit in the town of Fulton, according to a Wisconsin Department of Transportation State Traffic Operation Center news alert.

The crash investigation shows that a 2003 Chevrolet Venture was traveling south when the driver, a 19-year-old man, lost control of the van, causing it to enter the median and strike a guard wire, according to a Wisconsin State Patrol news release. The van came to rest in the right lane of the Interstate, facing west with no lights on.

A southbound Dodge Sprinter van, traveling at near highway speed, was unable to see the disabled vehicle and hit its passenger side, according to the release.

The man killed was a passenger in the Chevrolet van. Other Chevrolet van occupants included a 32-year-old woman and five children, ages 12 to 1 month old, according to the release.

The 19-year-old driver and 32-year-old woman in the Chevy suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the release. All of the injured were taken to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville.

The driver and sole occupant of the Dodge van was treated on the scene and released, according to the news release.

Citations are pending while the investigation continues, according to the release.

The crash shut down both lanes of the Interstate for nearly four hours. Traffic was diverted off the Interstate at Highway 59.

The Edgerton Fire Department; Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center's emergency field vehicle with on-call physicians; firefighters and paramedics from Janesville, Stoughton, Milton, city and town of Beloit, Clinton, Cambridge, Deer-Grove EMS, Evansville and Whitewater, and Rock and Dane county sheriff's deputies assisted state troopers at the scene.
